Summer Learning Journey Week 2 day 4 #2

Charles Upham is probably one of NZ's most famous soldiers. He served in WWII. he was one of three people and the only combat soldier to get the VC 2 times. Upham earned his first VC in Crete in May 1941. After being severely heart in the latter engagement, Upham was cought by the Germans. with lots of escape attempts, one including tring to clime over his camp’s barbed-wire fences on a sunny day.

  1. Hi (again) Justice!

I am so excited to have the chance to post two comments on your blog today. After reading about your VE Party I now have the chance to learn about Charles Upham. It sounds like he was a very brave man who refused to give up, even when the situation was extremely challenging and dangerous. I really admire his courage.

Do you know what happened to Charles after he was caught by the Germans and attempted to escape by climbing over the barb-wire fence? Did any of his escape attempts work?

Thanks for sharing this interesting information about a very special man in New Zealand history. We are very lucky that so many men and women fought for our freedom, aren't we?

    Awesome work, Justice.

    See you soon,

    Rachel :)
