DAY 5: Wasting Away Week 2 Activity 3: Faded Glory.

Three different ideas or strategies for raising funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fundraise here in New Zealand?

  1. We could Rome around the street and ask people for money.
  2. Run things out side of shops .
  3. have some kind of games .

DAY 5: Wasting Away Week 2 Activity 2: The Black Drain

The Manawatu River is in Manawatu-Wanganui and is highly polluted. This is largely due to runoff from surrounding dairy farms, but towns on the river’s edge also contribute to this pollution with untreated sewage and industrial waste. In order to protect these species, as well as others living in the river, the Horowhenua branch has joined the Manawatu Leaders Accord, a forum which aims to promote awareness of the rivers significance; restore it to a state of health and ensure the water and surrounding land is used sustainably.

the Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River passes through a number of suburbs in Christchurch such as Hoon Hay, Cashmere and Opawa before draining into the Avon, Heathcote estuary, ihutai in Ferrymead.

DAY 5: Wasting Away Week 2 Activity 1: Off the Menu

Fishing is a really common activity in New Zealand. In fact, people have fished in New Zealand for centuries. Unfortunately, over the past few decades some people have caught too many fish in one area and left the region without enough fish to replenish the stocks. When this happens we call the area ‘over fished’ and it is closed to all private and commercial fishing. If people are caught fishing in these areas, they are required to pay a fine. The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000.
What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for over fishing? leave a comment and tell me.

I think that it is a good rule. It is a good rule because if it wasn't there than lots of people would just fish and fish and fish till there were no fish left and that means no more fish and chips.

Week 2 day 4 Activity 3: Picture Perfect

I think that in this photo the people in it are just taking a Selfie. They are tacking this Selfie to remember that they had gone to a rugby game. What rugby game? I have no idea so it's
just a rugby game. I think that it's funny that they don't know that the camera man is recording them.

Week 2 Day 4 Activity 2: It’s All in the Name

I've been to the Devil's Bath at Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in Rotorua

And if we were to re name it I think that

  1. The Devil's Toilet
  2. Is it alive?*
  3. Green puddle of something!?
  4. A hole in the ground that smells funny
Are good names

Week 2 Day 4 Activity 1: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Arguably, one of the most dramatic and spectacular (beautiful) places to visit in New Zealand is Milford Sound. It has been referred to as the ‘eighth wonder of the world.’ It is a beautiful fiord (steep valley) that was formed when big pieces of ice (glaciers) melted. The melted glaciers created a beautiful river that is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and snow-capped mountains. People who visit Milford Sound are able to take a boat cruise through the middle of the fiord, walk around the area on the Milford Track or fly above the fiord as part of a private helicopter tour.Let’s imagine that you had the chance to visit Milford Sound by boat, foot (walking) or air (helicopter). Which option would you prefer?
I would like to go there and have a helicopter tour mainly because I would love to go in a helicopter ride. The fiord will be interesting to go there as well.

Week 2 Day 3 Activity 3: The Midnight Zone

It is the only specimen of its kind in the entire world! This squid weighs approximately 500 kg. In 2018, a team at Te Papa decided to move the giant squid from one area of the museum to another.

Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]

25 x 4 = 100   100 + 75 = 175 / 175 x 2 = 350
15 x 5 75        10x 15=children 8x 25=adults
25 x 6 = 150

350 + 150 = 500

Week 2 day 2 Activity 2: Mighty Mangroves

On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?

MY DAD! My is strong and tough because he cut down some tress and grows a garden. Hes tough because he drives to and fro from Hamilton to Auckland almost every week more than one time. BUT the real reason that hes strong and tough is... that... hes... getting... MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😑😑😑

Week Day 2 Activity 1: Weaving a Tall Tale…

I have done some flax weaving at school and at one other place that I can not remember. It was fun kind of hard though but fun. If I was asked to it again I would do it again.

Week 2 day 1 Activity 3: Something Smells Fishy…

One of the longest and largest rivers in the world is called the Amazon River. It is located in South America and is approximately 6400 kilometres long. That is four times longer than the entire country of New Zealand. for this Activity I had to write out each fact and in CAPITAL LETTERS beside the fact, write the word ‘TRUE’ if it is a true fact or ‘FALSE’ if it is not true.

Fish Fact #1: The oldest known fish in the world is a 65 year old Australian lungfish. TRUE
Fish Fact #2: Sharks are the only fish that have eyelids. TRUE
Fish Fact #3: Starfish are a type of fish. FALSE

Fish Fact #4: Fish communicate with each other by making low-pitched sounds (moans, hisses, etc) TRUE
Fish Fact #5: Fish usually swim together in groups called ‘classes.’ FALSE

Week 2 Day 1 Activity 2: The Great Taupo Cycle Challenge

If I were given a free ticket to compete in the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge next year and could only bring three people to be my support crew. I would bring My Mum because who else would you prig. I would bring my Dad as well because hes a joker, and my friend Lepa because hes my friend and I'll be able hang out with him after ward.

Week 2 Day 1 Activity 1: Surfs Up!

One my favourite things to do in summer is to go on bike rides. The reason why is that its just plain fun and i really enjoy it. Me, my mum, my brother and my step dad went to Napier for a week and we did lots of biking the longest one we did was about 40 km and it took about 4 hours. :)

Day five Activity 3: Going, going….gone

"Oh, you've never heard of New Zealand. Well, it's where I grew up, it was the place that I lived in, it was beautiful. Lots of people, well 4 ish million. The biggest city in the country was Auckland, the capital was Wellington. There were lots of rivers and a strip of mountains on the South Island. Oh yes, there were two islands, one in the north and the other in the south. Although the northern one was smaller there were more people on the island than the other. There were lots of vast areas of bush all over the country that were good for hunting. The longest river was the Waikato river. I lived in Auckland. I loved it there. There were a lot of things to do there. My home was close to an estuary/beach was a very convenient on hot days. You could drive almost anywhere in the country in a full 24 hour day. A beach was never far away, you could drive to so many beaches. I remember burning my feet on the black sand at the beaches on the east coast of Auckland, watching the surf and listening to the bird song. In the mornings at my house when the sun started to rise the birds calling would wake me up with the din. It is sad to me that my beautiful homeland now rests with the fish. My mum would ask me where will the spirits jump from now if Cape Reinga is gone? I used to to joke Mt Everest - she never laughed."

Day 5 Activity 2: Living on the Edge

Dear So 'n so Mc Miringhim (mrr-ing-him)

396 Abigail Cress Algert

For the last few weeks me and my class have been in a tundra some where. We have set up camp in a hilly area but otherwise this place is flat. The teacher said that this place will keep the cold wind more or less out. Last week the 4/6/2046 some kid thought that she saw an arctic fox but nobody else saw it. She might have but IDK. Someone went missing the other day. There were three things left behind; a scarf, a bag and a beanie. I think it's winter now it's bloody cold and there's animal blood all over the place. I think that something had a fight here but we're on our way home in two days so i'm not fussed. Not much happened in the last two days, we just packed up and found some plants.

See ya soon, Friend,

P.S none of this is real and not scientifically accurate.

Day 5. Activity 1: Towering Timbers

I think that logging should be allowed in NZ. I think that logging should be allowed because it gives jobs to New Zealanders thus giving them money and money to the country. It'll also provide the things that we need to build things (e.g houses). BUT, it should be controlled and not in native forest and what you cut should be replanted that was you will have more wood to cut and then things can live there for the time being.

S.LJ day 4 Activity 3: Salt and Pepper

My hotel would be made of dinosaur bones and built in north america  most likely the U.S.A or Canada. the reason is that the most dinosaur bones were fund there.

Add 1 cup grated cheese.
Add pasta to the cheese sauce (or vice versa) and stir. Place combined mixture in an ovenproof container and cover with rest of cheese, tomato slices and bread crumbs.Bake in oven for 30mins or until cheese on top is golden brown and bubbling.

S.L.J Day 4 Activity 1: Scaling New Heights

For this post I must imagine that I met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and got to interview him. I only get to ask 5 questions. those 5 questions would be. where did you go to school and what was your favourite subject? what did it feel like to be put on the five dollar bill? whats your favourite food? what was the hardest thing you did while climbing Mt Everest? what made you want to climb Mt Everest?

bonus question: If I were interviewing you what question would you want me to ask you?

S.L.J Day 3 Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund

I have watched the video on how the WWF is trying to save the Saimaa ringed seal. the are about 360 individuals left. to help these animals they are building snow banks so the the mothers can give berth in the lair that it digs into the snow bank. Joonas Fitze communications officer says that it's good that we are doing this for them but we need a long term plan.

S.L.J Day 3, Activity 2: The Secretive Skink

3 pros about working as a DOC ranger are getting paid, looking after native plants and animals and working outdoors.

3 cons about working as a DOC ranger are cleaning toilets and other messes left by people who didn't pick up their rubbish, working outdoors in terrible weather and working away from home for long periods of time.

I would not like to be a DOC ranger because I hate the rain and cleaning toilets and I don't super like animals so this would not be an ideal job for me.

S.L.J DAY 3: Awesome Animals Activity 1: Fantastic Beasts.

Demon Pig

Picture a pig. Now imagine that pig is as big as a car and as black as coal. It has eyes that glow like hot coals. Imagine it looks right at you. That's when you notice that it has gigantic horns, as well as the normal boar tusks. They look incredibly sharp all of them. "Run!" your mind screams. But where.....you spy a climbable tree and go for it. You last thought is "I didn't know that pigs could fly" as the sound of a snort and the smell of rotten fish and cranberries flows over you. The bat like wings knock you from your perch. The Demon Pig has struck again. The finality of its massive curly ram like horns silence you forever.

S.L.J Weird and Wonderful

Image result for awesome cactusI would need 3mls each day for 365 days to keep my cactus alive. Here is the calculation:

3ml x 300 = 900ml
3ml x 60 = 180ml
3ml x 5 = 15 mls
added together (900+180+15) = 1095ml

I like the Black Fern's uniform the best because of the red and yellow stripe down the side.

S.L.J Giants among us

I would definitely want to go and see Tāne Mahuta one day. I would like to visit this humongous tree because it would be interesting to behold the size of the tree. Tāne Mahuta is named after the Māori god of the forest who is most famous for separating Ranginui and Papatuanuku 'in the beginning'. It is interesting that this legend has this very large tree separating the land from the sky. One reason that I might not want to visit this tree is to stop it from getting Kauri Dieback Disease and getting sick and dying.

S.L.J. My Hometown

My home town is Auckland. I have lived there for most of my whole life. The Skytower is the tallest free standing structure in the country and I like it because it looks like a spear. I enjoy going to the museum. The museum is very interesting and full of bones and old things. My favourite part of the museum is floating planes that are in one of the stairwells. It is called a Spitfire. There are beaches galore, and you can always go to a new beach. My favourite beach is Piha. Piha is a very long beach with waves that are spectacular for people who enjoy surfing. Even though the traffic is disastrous, Auckland is a absolutely wonderful city to live in.
