DAY 5: Wasting Away Week 2 Activity 2: The Black Drain

The Manawatu River is in Manawatu-Wanganui and is highly polluted. This is largely due to runoff from surrounding dairy farms, but towns on the river’s edge also contribute to this pollution with untreated sewage and industrial waste. In order to protect these species, as well as others living in the river, the Horowhenua branch has joined the Manawatu Leaders Accord, a forum which aims to promote awareness of the rivers significance; restore it to a state of health and ensure the water and surrounding land is used sustainably.

the Ōpāwaho/Heathcote River passes through a number of suburbs in Christchurch such as Hoon Hay, Cashmere and Opawa before draining into the Avon, Heathcote estuary, ihutai in Ferrymead.

  1. Hi Justice,

Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. I see that you've chosen to write about 2 big rivers that are polluted, unfortunately. I'm glad that you've chosen to learn about them. It's very sad to think that these very important waterways have been polluted because we haven't been careful enough with farming methods and/or with how we deal with our waste materials. Hopefully something can be done to heal these rivers in the near future.

I'm afraid though, Justice, that you've copied some information about the Manawatu River out of a website or text and not given the author credit. I don't think that you've used your own words to describe this river and it's troubles with pollution. If you copy someone else's work and you don't give credit to them then this is called plagiarism, and that's a problem.

For full points for this activity you have to give information in your own words.

Also, you haven't completed the description of what's going on with the 2nd river system. Perhaps you were in a rush the day you did this activity. For full points you'd have to re-write the first entry and complete the information about the second river.

I hope that your return to school this term will be a good one and that you'll have the chance to learn many new and interesting things!! I'm glad you chose to be part of the Summer Learning Journey program!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
